Homeschool students are invited to join Quiet Valley Staff and Volunteers for a Winter Camp at Quiet Valley. Be sure to bundle up, as we will be spending some part of each day on the farm. Participants will learn about traditional lighting methods and the role candles played in everyday life while creating their own hand-dipped taper candles.<\/span><\/p>\n The workshop will cover historic approaches to measuring and preparing wax, followed by guided instruction in dipping taper candles using methods similar to those practiced in the past. Participants will also learn how to properly finish and care for their candles so they can be safely used at home.<\/span><\/p>\n No prior experience is necessary. All materials are provided, and each participant will leave with a set of handmade candles and a deeper understanding of historic household lighting. Participants should bring a lunch. In this introductory workshop, participants will learn the basics of drop spindle spinning<\/strong>, mastering the essential techniques of drafting and twist. Once comfortable, students will have the opportunity to try both a historic walking wheel and a treadle spinning wheel<\/strong>, experiencing firsthand how spinners of the past produced yarn for everyday use.
