DESCRIPTION:Homeschool students are invited to join Quiet Valley Staff and Volunteers for a Winter Camp at Quiet Valley. Be sure to bundle up\, as we will be spending some part of each day on the farm. The cost of camp is $35 per day. Participants may register for all three days or individual days of camp. When you register for all 3 days\, you’ll save $5 per day. Click here to see the topics for all three weeks. \n\nTopics:\n\nGrades 1-4: Winter Crafts and Games\n\nInstructor: Rachel Kresge\nDescription: Campers will step back in time to discover how children on a 19th-century farm spent their winter days. The group will enjoy hands-on activities making historic winter crafts\, such as corn husk dolls\, tin punch ornaments\, and braided wool items. They will also play traditional games like hoop rolling\, marbles\, and relay-style winter chores\, learning how children long ago entertained themselves without screens or electronics. Through creating\, playing\, and exploring together\, students will gain a fun and interactive understanding of winter life in the past.\n\n\nGrades 5-8: Art from Observation\n\nInstructor: Joan Glusiec\nDescription: Campers will spend the day developing their drawing and artistic skills through guided instruction and creative exploration. In the morning\, students will work with pencil\, learning basic techniques such as perspective\, shading\, and drawing objects from life. Using items found around Quiet Valley and simple still-life setups\, campers will practice careful observation and sketching. In the afternoon\, campers will build on their drawings by adding color and experimenting with different art materials\, including tempera paint\, watercolor\, and pastels. Students may create as many or as few artworks as they choose while exploring the medium or mediums that interest them most. This day encourages creativity\, skill-building\, and artistic confidence while drawing inspiration from the historic farm setting.\n\n\n\n\nCost: $35 (sign up for all 3 weeks and receive $5 off per day)\n\n \nPayment due at time of registration. As a group\, campers will learn where winter foods came from and how simple ingredients and tools were used to make warm meals and treats. Through hands-on\, age-appropriate activities\, students will take part in food preparation\, observe cooking techniques\, and explore winter customs and traditions. Stories and discussion will help campers understand how food\, family\, and tradition brought comfort during the cold winter season.\n\n\nGrades 5-8: Weave Your Own Stool\n\nInstructor: Rachel Kresge\nDescription: Older campers will step back in time to experience a traditional 19th-century farm craft: stool seat weaving. Each student will weave their own stool to take home\, learning the techniques and skills used by farm families to create durable\, functional household items during the long winter months. As a group\, campers will spend part of the day in the one-room schoolhouse\, practicing simple lessons\, recitations\, and games used by students long ago. The group will then move to the hearth kitchen\, where campers will assist with age-appropriate cooking tasks and learn how families prepared warm meals during the winter months. Stories\, discussion\, and guided participation help younger students connect everyday life today with life in the past.\n\n\nGrades 5-8: From Schoolhouse to Hearth: Winter Life Long Ago\n\nInstructor: Deb Seip & Bonnie Scott\nDescription: Older campers will explore winter life in the 1800s through immersive\, full-group experiences that encourage discussion and comparison. As a class\, campers will take part in lessons in the one-room schoolhouse\, examining historic teaching methods and expectations while engaging in period-style activities.
