Pocono Mountain Arts Council November 2009
This has been a difficult year for all of us. We are coming to the end and a rebound will soon be felt across
our beautiful land. The ragweed is higher than I have ever seen it, “Where is the first frost when you want it?”
Acorns are larger than usual, squirrels are running about gathering up all they can and soon, our friends the black
bears will be foraging for their winter food before going into hibernation. After the year we have had, winter will
be a breeze!
Even if you are running out of room to store your creations, please continue to create. Maybe they do not
know it yet; but, the world needs your work in their homes and businesses. Remember that Van Gogh only sold
one piece during his lifetime.
It has been my pleasure to serve as your Treasurer for three years and your President the last two years.
If I am re-elected, I will serve my final year with enthusiasm and rededication to the wants and needs of our
fantastic artist community here on Top of the Mountain.
On a lighter note, as our holydays and holidays approach, please remember the less fortunate. A quick
story, if you will. Soon after our son, Daniel, started working for Conan O’ Brien he saw Conan right after
Christmas and asked him, “What did you get for Christmas?” Conan replied, “It’s not what I got, it was what I
gave.” Daniel asked Conan what he meant. Conan told how his father always dreamed of owning a certain
automobile. That Christmas Conan gave his father that car as a gift. Ever since then, we look forward to the very
thoughtful gifts Daniel gives to family and friends at Christmastime. Dan and I hope that your holiday season is
filled with joy and thoughtful gifts of being together with friends and family.
Anyone wishing to be on the Speakers schedule for 2010, please give me a call at 570.839.7227 before

For those of you who participated in Lake Naomi Gallery
this year, thank you. We were scheduled to have a meet
and greet on the grounds, but the weather didn’t help us. It
rained Saturday and we were hoping to have a rain date for
that Sunday and the ground was so soggy that we opted to
post-pone it. Then as we were trying to figure out another
date, they had some personnel turnovers (2 people left).
The new girl has jumped in with both feet but management
has decided that we will have it scheduled for spring. It
will happen.
For those of you who didn’t participate you can do so this
year. All you need to do is send me 12 jpegs through email
(datpat@ptd.net), mark in the re: line, Lake Naomi. I
will then turn them into a catalog, then meet with Lake
Naomi personnel and jury in 24 artists. This is one of the
few galleries that runs for 1 month intervals. We will pick
8 of your pieces to be hung for one month. We have had
sales at this gallery. So get your stuff around!
Okay guys time to start submitting your names to me for
participation in the rotational gallery. I book the galleries
for one year. Since most of the galleries are for 2 months
that means you have 6 opportunities to get your name out
there. We have had some very good sales this year.
What I need from you is a phone conversation so we can
get you on the schedule. Please call me any day but
Mondays.
Thanks. Pat Transue 421-0562.

Meet our Board Member...
Rosemary Rinkowski
Rosemary Rinkowski joined our Board of
Directors in 2008 and she has been a great help
with her own expertise, and with her assistance in
finding us other professional resources when
needed.
Rosemary started her career as part-time
cashier at J.C. Penney and stayed with them for
twenty-three years, moving up to a supervisory
position and then on to manager of the accounting
offices. When J.C. Penney decided to centralize
their accounting function, Rosemary took the opportunity
to enroll in Northampton Community
College, where she recevied an Associates Degree.
She then moved on to DeSales University
and graduated cum laude with a dual Bachelor’s
Degree in Accounting and Business. She joined
Riley and Company, Inc., a well-known and wellrespected
local firm, in 2004.
She and her husband, Phil, have three
children and four grandchildren, and have now
lived in the Poconos for nineteen years. To fill
their empty nest, they’ve acquired two dogs --
Casey, a Golden Retriever, and Dakota, a black
Cocker Spaniel. Rosemary says the dogs keep
them as busy as the kids did!!
Reading, needlepoint, camping and whitewater
rafting are some of her hobbies and activities;
and, in retirement, she wants to travel our
country in an RV.
Something you’d probably never guess
about Rosemary - she once went skydiving, and
loved it!!!
A True Treasure
Did you know that our Arts Council has in its possession
one of the greatest art treasures of all time?
Is it is Picasso... A DaVinci... A Van Gogh? Not
exactly, but it is equally as rare as valuable. This
work is a beautiful mosaic entitled... “PMAC”. Its
pieces comprised of the most caring, compassionate,
talented and giving people you may ever know.
Transparent and Opaque, Thick and Thin, Curved
and Straight, Dark and Light, so many shapes and
colors harmoniously working together to create such
a wonderful work. A joy to behold is our precious
Arts Council... A mosaic full of diversity, creativity
and passion!
It has truly been an honor to serve as your Vice
President over the past few years. During that time,
I have witnessed the unfailing dedication of our
incredible leadership team and all the members who
sacrifice their time and talent for the benefit of all
our members and the community.
So, I thank all of you who have so diligently worked
together to create, support and grow this amazing
Arts Council. Also... A very special Thank You to
everyone who has, and continues to show such kindness
to my family and to others who experienced
difficult times.
Your love is the light that illumes the mosaic and
brings it to life!
~ Valerie Sagheddu
Keep in Mind...
Our condolences go out to Dee Kasarda and her family with the passing of her sister, Margie,
and to Joanne Bridgman on the passing of her mother-in-law.

Show Talk - Show Talk - Show Talk
Member’s Photographers Show at Northampton Community College
The Member’s Photographers Show was held during the month of September. Wow, the talent in this group is fantastic!
We tried something different this year. We had 5 specific categories: architecture, floral, landscape, portrait and computer
manipulated. It was interesting to say the least, especially the portrait category. We had portraits of dogs, cats,
birds and even a lizard.
I want to take a moment to thank everyone who helped, but especially the following people: Catherine Schratt, Glenna
Rohrbach, Rich Genova, Dale Traupman, my husband, Dave and my oldest son, David. It is because of their volunteering
that the show was able to be hung. I also want to thank all the artists this year who participated. You are the ones
who make the show! Now for the best part of this job; announcing the winners:
Architecture: Judy Hamer for her “Shodows - Sante Fe”
Floral: Leslie Nagy for her “Succulants”
Landscape: Joanne Bridgman for her “Spruce Cabin Falls”
Portrait: Carl Silverstein for his portairt of “The Foul”
Computer Manipulated: Barbara Case for her “Waiting for October”
I want to thank Bob Ace from the Pocono Photographers Club for judging this year. It was a tough decision. So guys
the last thing to be said is we will be doing this again next year, so start thinking about what you want to submit or better
yet, take those cameras out and start taking pictures. Enjoy what you do.

ARTIST PUBLISHES BOOK OF MEMOIRS
In her heart-warming memoir, The House on the Sixth
Floor, award winning artist recounts
the early experiences that shaped her as a person
and influenced her as an artist. For art lovers and
for all those who appreciate art and its wholesome impact
on a growing child, there is much in Joan’s memoirs
to warm the heart. Times past are vividly brought
to life as Joan recalls the family pride in the Bronx
home where she grew up during the ‘40s and ‘50s, to
the interesting characters who were part of her
life...she had the ability to find beauty in her surroundings,
whether on scenic auto trips with her family, vacations
in the country or just gazing out of the
family’s multi-windowed apartment, which her
mother had whimsically named, The House on the
Sixth Floor.

Storage Shed
A marriage made in heaven! The Arts Council needed a secure place to store the racks and signs owned
by the Council. The officers searched about checking property tax laws, availability of locations, etc. Some
municipalities assess any building with a roof, some at least 100 square feet, etc. Where the taxing laws were
favorable, we could not secure a location. Since we are located in Coolbaugh for meetings, we asked the Board
of Supervisors in October 2008 for a location. Inspecting existing areas, none were suitable due to wet
basements, curving stairways, etc. Finally, we asked could we put a shed on the property. In August 2009
permission was granted for which we are truly grateful.
Building the shed became the next problem. A brainstorm brought us to a young man looking for a
viable ‘Eagle Scout Project’. Known to several officers, Vincent Misuraca of Mount Pocono was just such a
young man. He had planned several projects that did not meet the rigid Boy Scouts of America standards. With
some modifications, our project was approved locally. Now, it is on to the regional council for approval. We
hold our collective breath for the answer.
In the meantime, Rubbermaid (the manufacturer of the MAX, Jr. Shed) is only sold through Home
Depot. We recently saw it on sale at Home Deopt. Our Board Member, Jim Frutchey, gladly went with
Treasurer, Dan Ferguson to make the purchase. Jim has stored the very heavy box in the municipal garage just
in front of the shed’s location.
One more approval and Vinny’s crew can get to work preparing the ground and building the Council
shed. A marriage made in heaven!
Mrs. Barbara S. Young of Tobyhanna. The beautiful Ruth Yobs handmade quilt was raffled off
by the Coolbaugh Touwnship Historical Association. The quilt hung in our meeting room for
the past year and many members took chances in support of the Association.
And the Winner is...
